The caps lock is powered shortly after the chime. If you have your original keyboard swap it out and try it. you will find it doesn't light up until the gear starts to spin (again this is too late). You can test this by pressing your caps lock and looking for the green light while in the boot process. After 3 hours on the phone with level 3 we did discover that the keyboard is not getting power until the kernel is initiated, which is too late. I contacted Apple directly and went through several "solutions" and guesses as to why the keys are not functional until the kernel has passed the boot. I purchased a new aluminum keyboard to replace the original one (sticky key problem) and have been unable to use Boot Camp or start from a CD/DVD without changing the StartUp Drive in System Pref. I have a iMac 2GHz Intel Core Duo with OS X 10.4.11 and am going through the same thing. Has anyone else come across another suggestion? Matt sent me a cool little app "Capture Data" that grabs all my machine info and zips it up nicely for the engineers to review.

I am hopeful that Apple will come up with a patch fairly quick. I found that AppleScript idea mentioned by xnav doesn't actually require the user to have admin privileges ? the only downside is you have to log-in to access the script then reboot in windows. It appears that there is no easy solution at this time. We went through using the same keyboard on multiple machines as well as re-installing my OS (hitting a finish nail with a sledge hammer). Matt was very helpful and we spoke for several hours for several days. It is a software issue that will require a patch or firmware update. This problem seems to only exist on the 2006 iMac.

It takes some brute force work with a OSX system install disk, force booting to the CD or DVD and getting back into Sys Prefs to redirect to OSX. I can use the Startup Disk function in System Prefs to force a boot to WinXP, but that is permanent. Soooo, I plunked down the money to upgrade to OSX 10.5 (now at 10.5.2), did so, but the Option key on the Al board still won't bring up the op system choice screen.
Switching back to the old plastic board, Option key does that job fine. Once done with all that, the Option key on the Al board, held down during startup, no longer diverts to the option of choosing which op system to boot.
Per the keyboard instructions I did go to the Apple website, downloaded and installed the Apple Keyboard Software. The original white and clear plastic keyboard was getting a bad case of "sticky keys" so I bought a new Aluminum keyboard. I had Boot Camp beta installed on my iMac running OSX 10.4.11 and Win XP.
